WITHDRAWING FROM ANTIDEPRESSANTS being a partaker of antidepressants for 31 years in differing doses.
WITHDRAWING FROM ANTIDEPRESSANTS Deciding to practice what I preach and take myself off them seemed the logical thing to do. Coupled with the personal side of my life finally coming good. Of course there is a need for antidepressants and they are very helpful with many psychological disorders. Some are needed on a long term basis, however they are more effective when used with therapy. The stigma attached to mental illness is sadly still with us, although less prominent. Talking therapies are becoming more and more accepted. Hypnotherapy is extremely effective but stage hypnosis has done it’s reputation no favors what so ever.

Being the main reasons for prescribing antidepressants, anxiety and depression are to of the list . In a busy world, many people won’t find the time for therapy. still so much we can learn about our minds and the way in which we can better master it. Antidepressants have been with us now for many years and are a good short term relief from unpleasant symptoms. Important to say that you must be sure they are the correct route for you. As a result of taking these drugs for many years , my neurobiology is taking it’s time to repair. Serotonin is the main neurotransmitters regulated by these drugs . SSRI’s are the most widely prescribed.

Notoriously addictive, tricyclic antidepressants were amongst the first that came along. Side effects ranging from tachycardia to sedation, they were a ” sledge hammer to crack a nut” in some cases. Now more widely used for the top end conditions they have their place. Withdrawal from these bad boys would be a bit of a mission.

WITHDRAWING FROM ANTIDEPRESSANTS
SSRI’s being less addictive and more targeted towards mood levelling, are now very popular. As a result they are big business. Furthermore a way of life! Too busy to talk and too busy to deal with our worries which is fueling the original issue. The world needs to slow down! One of the biggest killers of young people today is suicide. So many choices, decisions and responsibilities put on young shoulders. Depression and anxiety creep up from behind. Why do we put so much pressure on our young people. However effective these drugs are, we are not real all the while we are taking them. The causal issue is not being dealt with. Take the pills, feel better and on we go. One of the worst for that is writing this post.

HIT THE PROZAC….
“hit the prozac” became a catch phrase of the 90’s. How sad is that ! how ignorant we were. Much publicity surrounded this particular drug in the 90’s when it was widely used. Interestingly a number of suicides were connected to it. Swift action and rebranding to “fluoxetine” gave it new life. Did Prozac become the scapegoat for antidepressants? Doctors paid by the drug company to use their drug, doctor prescribes, drug gets blamed. Why ? because nobody will take responsibility. We have to take some responsibility for our own mental health. Why would you want another person taking responsibility for your mental health ? it doesn’t make sense.

LOOKING AT IT FROM A MORE SPIRITUAL ANGLE….
Again, I’m going to bang on about mixing science with the spiritual. Although, mindfulness isn’t really spiritual it’s just being aware of who you are and taking control. You cannot make another person or a bottle of pills responsible for your happiness. Driving between Hastings and Rye there is a homemade sign on the side of the road. Local residents post a different affirmation every week. It never fails to make me smile. The creator of that idea is a genius and unsung hero. ” Happiness is an inside job” was this weeks. So true.
